Thinking of giving your laminate flooring a makeover? Painting it might just be the solution you’re looking for. While this type of flooring is hard-wearing and durable, over time it can inevitably get marked with scuffs and stains (Check out our handy guide on how to clean laminate flooring). Instead of shelling out for a whole new floor, why not consider a fresh coat of paint?

Painting laminate floors isn’t without its challenges, though. Here are a few things to consider before diving in:

Preparation is Key: Top of the list and for a reason. If the floor isn’t cleaned and prepped correctly, the paint may not adhere properly or could easily scrape off. As with any job, this can be time consuming and back-breaking, so take your time and the rest will all fall into place!

Choose the Right Products: Using the wrong type of primer or paint can lead to disastrous results. It’s essential to select products specifically designed for laminate to ensure longevity. You can’t just slap emulsion or gloss paint all over the floor so choose wisely!

Smooth Surfaces Matter: Sanding away glossy finishes is crucial for the paint to adhere properly. This must be done gently to avoid damaging the composite material beneath.

Repair Any Damage: Mistakes happen, especially if you’re new to DIY projects. If you accidentally sand too much or encounter cracks and holes, don’t worry. Fill them in with caulking or filler before priming.

Priming: Applying a suitable primer is essential to create a surface that the paint can adhere to effectively. Let the primer dry completely before moving on to painting.

Choosing the Right Colour and Finish: There is every colour under the sun out there, so choose a colour that will match your colour scheme. Consider neutrals if you don’t want to make a statement. Opt for durable paints like porch paint or latex. Avoiding acrylics as they are not suitable for painting floors and may wear away to easily.

Painting Process: Whether you prefer a roller, brush, or spray paint is entirely your choice, but choose a method that suits your needs and space. Make sure to protect the surrounding areas with masking tape. If you are going to spray the floor then make sure that there is adequate ventilation and that any furniture is well covered.

Sealing for Protection: Consider adding a sealant like polyurethane to protect your freshly painted floors from water damage and high footfall. Regular maintenance with sealant can help keep your floors looking pristine for longer.

Be Mindful of Safety: Painted floors can initially be slippery, especially in high-traffic areas. Adding felt pads to furniture legs and keeping the area pet and shoe-free avoid any accidents on your newly painted flooring.

Painting laminate flooring can breathe new life into a space without breaking the bank. However, it’s essential to follow the proper steps and use the right materials for a successful outcome. If painting isn’t your thing, consider exploring other flooring options such as replacing the floor with one from our collection of laminate flooring.
