What music do YOU listen to when you mow the lawn? LawnStarter asked our lawn care pros what they listen to and their favorite songs about grass cutting.
The results – from more than 600 of our pros – were ear-opening. You might want to add a couple of these to your playlist to get your personal mower engine running.
Favorite Songs about Grass and Lawn Mowing
No. 1 with a bullet among our pros’ favorite songs about grass and lawn mowing is “Big Green Tractor” by Jason Aldean. It’s upbeat, heartwarming, and features a John Deere tractor.
What makes this song so special? “It describes working hard in the summer with the sun shining real bright, sweating all day from the sun and drinking some water,” says Pascual Martin, Martin Lawn Care in Jackson, Mississippi.
In fact, our lawn care pros’ top 3 all feature tractors (be it the farming or lawn mowing kind).

Pro comments about their favorite songs about lawn mowers and cutting grass:
Farmer’s Daughter: “It’s just such a great song about a blue-collar worker, working on a farm and sweating his butt off but the farmer’s daughter makes it all worth it. It reminds me of mowing lawns to make my customers happy and smile at a happy lawn.” – Michael Rizzo, Dream Lawns in Gilbert, Arizona.
Cut It: “This song has me ready to go cut grass. Don’t matter how high the grass is or how big the lawn is, as long as it’s growing we cut it.” – James Rayford, Rayford’s Landscaping & Lawn Care in Kenner, Louisiana.
Where the Green Grass Grows: “Because it’s nice to dream about what could be.” – Nicolas Puper-Harrington, Lawn and Order in Denton, Texas.
Lawn Boy: “It’s quirky and explores a young person’s dedication to mowing lawns.” – Scott Miller, Miller Lawncare and Snow Removal in Pekin, Illinois.
Worth mentioning: About 30% of respondents had no preferred song about cutting grass or mowing lawns.
Music Genres Pros Listen to While Mowing (and Why)
Country music is by far the favorite type of music among the 602 respondents from all over the country. But our pros – like you – listen to all genres of music, and some prefer no tunes at all so they can be attuned to their machinery and surroundings.
New Music Genre?: Norse folk music is the music lawn care pro Henry Karr of Terrafirma Lawncare, in Avon Park, Florida, listens to while mowing.

Reasons for Listening
– Motivation/Energy: Upbeat genres like hip hop, rock, and EDM keep pros energized and moving quickly.
– Focus/Relaxation: Calming genres like R&B, country, jazz, and classical help maintain focus and reduce stress.
– Time Passing Quickly: Music or podcasts make long workdays feel shorter.
– Personal Enjoyment: Many choose music they love or that reflects their cultural or personal identity.
Surprising Findings from Our Survey
Singing Lawn Mower Man: One lawn care pro, Matthew Mattingly, recently released a new song. “I listen to my own voice. I sing overtones over the sound of my lawn mower and trimmer engines,” says Mattingly, of Happy Grass Lawn and Leaves in Louisville, Kentucky.
Old School Cutting Crew: Our pros’ favorite songs about grass include “Who’s Gonna Mow Your Grass” by Buck Owens, “Green Green Grass of Home” by Tom Jones or Porter Wagoner, “And the Grass Won’t Pay No Mind” by Elvis, and the “Green Acres” theme song.
Kid Stuff: Lawn care pros have families and kids, which explains “Handyman Hal Lawn Mower Song” and “Jonny Bop, the Lawn Mower Song” being on their playlists. – I had a blast watching these videos researching this piece.
Green ($$) for Cutting Green: “Hustlin’” by Rick Ro$$ and “Let Her Cook” by Glorilla. “To be a female lawn mower is uncommon, so I be out there cooking the yards,” explains pro Shemack Mills of Shreveport, Louisiana.
One-Hit Wonders: Pro favorites not getting multiple nods as favorites about grass and lawn mowing include: “Mowing Down the Roses,” “Blades of Glory (yes, from the skating movie),” “Grazing in the Grass,” “The Lawn Mower Song,” “Cutting People’s Grass,” “Lawn Mower Man,” “Grass is Always Greener,” “Con olor a Hierba (The Scent of Grass),” “So High,” and “Allergy Season.” Yes, that last one made me scratch my head too.
