Iconic wedding cake house hits market for first time in half a century

Sydney’s famous wedding cake house has hit the market for the first time since it was built 46 years ago, with a price guide of $9 million.

For decades, the distinctive mansion has welcomed commuters travelling across the Spit Bridge to Sydney’s northern beaches.

Now, they have an opportunity to look behind its iconic facade, which has been likened to a wedding cake for its unique shape of three tiers of white layers, colonnades and arches.

Inside, it’s like stepping into a time warp.

Set on a sprawling 1100sqm waterfront landholding, sales agent Brad Pillinger from Pillinger Double Bay said there was a notion of romanticism to the property’s history, which was purchased at auction in 1979 by a family just moments after viewing it for the first time.

They then set upon building their dream home in the early 1980s, with no expense spared.

“It’s in such a prominent position in a world famous waterway, it’s got a lot of passing boat traffic that can see it sitting there,” Mr Pillinger said.

“And the European influences on the design just make it stand out on the foreshore.”

Spanning three levels, 23 Battle Boulevard, Seaforth features four bedrooms with balconies, three bathrooms, an ornate timber staircase, as well as terrazzo flooring, decorative ceilings and mouldings.

There is ample space if the new owners want to install a pool, while an application has been submitted and approval is pending for the installation of a pontoon.

Mr Pillinger said the home would be best suited to a family.

“You’ve got levels but not too many of them, so if you have older kids, people can escape and have their own area,” he said.

“But when you’ve got a younger family…there’s gathering areas, it’s certainly for a family, and I don’t think it really matters what the mix of the kids’ ages are.”

With properties in the elite Seaforth pocket rarely hitting the market, Mr Pillinger said the residence was “affordable” for the area, and very well constructed.

“When you’ve got those iconic views and position, they don’t come up often so you’ve got to buy them,” he said.
